Word Game Helper

About this site

Word Game Helper is a free board solver for NYT Crossplay, Scrabble, and Words with Friends. You put the current board and your rack into the page. It lists legal places to play those tiles and scores them with that game's letter values, bonus squares, and all-tiles bonus.

There is no account. The board, the rack, and a screenshot you upload are handled in the browser. Saved boards stay in this browser. The picture is not sent to a server. The privacy page covers ads and analytics.

What a result means

Show Me Best Move tries straight lines that use the tiles you entered. A line is kept when every word it forms is in the word list, including words built at a right angle. The list is sorted by score. Click a result and the breakdown shows the main word, each cross-word, and the bonus for using all seven tiles.

The highest number is the highest score on this turn. The solver does not know which tiles are left in the bag, what your opponent holds, or whether you would rather save the J. It also does not exchange tiles for you.

How a turn works and how a score is calculated go through the rules those results are applying. The guide index links the rest.

The word list

All three games use one list on this site: the older North American TWL06, plus the two-letter words DA, GI, PO, TE, EW, and OK. That is 178,697 words. Those six hooks were added to the NASPA list in 2014 and 2018. They are marked on the two-letter word page.

NYT Crossplay uses NWL2023, with New York Times edits. Longer words added since 2006 can be accepted in the game and missing here. A word the Times has cut can be accepted here and rejected in the game. Words with Friends has its own official list, which this helper does not load separately.

If the game accepts a word and this page does not, play the game's word. The solver is a calculator for the list it has, not a copy of the New York Times dictionary.

Blanks and long searches

Enter a blank as ?. Crossplay allows three on the rack. Scrabble and Words with Friends allow two. A blank may be any letter and scores 0.

With two or three blanks, the search has more letters to try. It can take longer, and a play that starts several empty squares before an existing tile can be missed. If the page says the search took too long, or a move you can see on the board is absent, type that word in yourself and compare it with the listed scores.

Screenshots

Upload Screenshot is for NYT Crossplay. Choose a picture of the whole board, or paste one, or drop it on the board. The letters and the rack are read on your device. A review grid lets you fix a misread letter before you apply it. Scrabble and Words with Friends start from a board you type.

The three games

The homepage opens on Crossplay: a 40-point sweep, three blanks, and a center star that does not multiply the score. The Scrabble finder uses a 50-point bingo, two blanks, and a double-word center. The Words with Friends finder uses a 35-point bingo, two blanks, and no center bonus. Letter values change with the game. The comparison puts the three tables on one page. Tile counts for Crossplay are on the tile values chart, and the Crossplay bonus map is the board layout.
